1. Industrial Processes

Hydrogen Sites

Hydrogen plays a critical role in refining petroleum, treating metals, producing fertilizers and chemicals, and processing foods. In the United States, hydrogen is heavily used in refining to lower sulfur content, with 5.5 million metric tons (MMT) utilized for refining and 3.5 MMT for ammonia production in 2021. This highlights its importance in supporting key industrial processes.

Hydrogen has been pivotal in space exploration, serving as rocket fuel for NASA missions such as Apollo and the Space Shuttle programs. NASA’s Kennedy Space Center currently stores over 330 tonnes of liquid hydrogen, showcasing its capacity for large-scale storage

Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, offering clean energy for power plants and vehicles. As of March 2024, there are 210 operating fuel cell generators across 151 facilities in the U.S., with a total capacity of 384 MW. However, this accounts for less than 1% of U.S. electricity generation as of 2022.

California alone boasts around 60 hydrogen fueling stations, supporting the adoption of this technology.
